Hongru Zhang ( Meng Zhang / Linda )
I would like to pursue the possibilities of Eastern aesthetics in modern methods and western styles due to my obsession with the atmosphere of traditional paintings. My work is influenced by the mode of thinking of Chinese traditional landscape painting, a comprehensive way of observation, where we observe not only with our eyes, but we also smell, listen, and feel with our hearts.
Nature has always been my favorite subject and the core element which I insist of consistently using. It gives me more opportunities to explore and express its mysterious energy. Not only do I like large scale landscape paintings which include mountains and rivers, I also believe that smaller details of nature can bring out the same amount of energy. The collection of “WEN” was created by me between 2015 and 2017. “WEN” as a Chinese character, means both hearing and smelling in my native language. This polysemy character was selected in order to blur the impression of the senses, and not to limit the interpretation to only one sense. I believe viewers can place themselves into the depicted scene and use all their senses to interpret my works.
